UPCOMING EVENT

Join us to Latin American Media Arts Symposium 2026, thursday, October 15, 5 PM - 6:30 PM. I will participate as a panellist on Day 2: Sur Gallery -T rajectories of Latin-American Art in Canada.

The 2026 edition of LAMAS emerges at the intersections of affect, memory, futurity, and decoloniality within media arts practices shaped by Latin American diasporas across Canada. Held as part of aluCine’s 26th anniversary, this year’s symposium is shaped by translocal collaborations, care-based methodologies, and speculative approaches as frameworks for generating alternative cultural imaginaries, reasserting histories excluded from dominant narratives, and creating conditions for decolonial transformation within Canada’s arts ecology.

A project created by Southern Currents; a Toronto-based non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating Latin American media arts. Southern Currents champions underrepresented voices and fosters public appreciation for Latinx Canadian arts through film screenings, panels, symposia, workshops, live performances, and art exhibitions

Explore Individual trajectories within the evolving landscape of Latin American art in Canada.

Sur Gallery -Trajectories of Latin-American Art in Canada

Francisco-Fernando Granados, Hugo Bernilla and Jorge Lozano, moderated by Luísa Cruz

Over the past decade, Sur Gallery has emerged as an important space for supporting, presenting, and advancing the work of Latin American artists in Canada through exhibitions, public programs, and sustained cultural dialogues. Moderated by Luísa Cruz, this panel brings together Francisco-Fernando Granados, Hugo Bernilla, and Jorge Lozano to reflect on their relationships with the gallery and the ways it has supported their artistic development at different stages of their careers. The panellists will also situate their individual trajectories within the evolving landscape of Latin American art in Canada, considering the role of galleries such as Sur in strengthening artistic networks, challenging the historical underrepresentation of Latin American perspectives within Canadian institutions, and contributing to a more complex and expansive understanding of Canadian art history.

On October 1st Sur Gallery reopens with "Seeds of Our Ancestors" featuring the work of Hugo Bernilla and Maria Luisa de Villa.

During the celebration of Latin American Heritage Month we invite viewers to question, reflect, and understand the nuances behind the construction of heritage and identity. Restoring relationships and recognizing value in Indigenous knowledge from Abya Yala, these artists recover and highlight the interconnections, purposes, and relationships that thrive despite colonial and imperial attempts to deny and erase.

Join us October 1st for the opening reception, or visit us before November 28th to see the exhibition in person!

Curated by Tamara Toledo.

This exhibition is in partnership with Hispanic Canadian Arts & Cultural Association and Hemispheric Encounters.
